Wood Burning Fireplaces | What to Look for

Make sure you and your family are aware of and adhere to the following safety tips when you have a wood burning fireplace or stove in your home.

  • Never leave your fireplace unattended.
  • Keep children away from the flames.
  • Regularly inspect your fireplace to ensure it is in good working order. Check the damper ―  is it working properly? How about the vent? Open the flue and shine a flashlight up the chimney to ensure there are no cracks in the lining, obstructions or other buildup.
  • If you do notice buildup, corrosion, a crack, or maybe your glass door or wire mesh is broken or the masonry is loose, avoid using the fireplace until you have it cleaned and/or repaired. Contact our service team for assistance.
  • When you’re ready to use the fireplace, make sure the damper is open before you start your fire, to avoid any gasses from being released into your home.
  • Use only dry wood. Don’t place charcoal in your wood-burning fireplace ― charcoal emits dangerous carbon monoxide fumes that can permeate your home and cause harm to anyone who breathes them in.
  • Clean your cooled fireplace periodically to keep soot, ash, or dust from escaping into your home.
  • A small amount of ash (inch in height) is okay to keep in the firebox during the fireplace-using months ― it acts as an insulator.  Clear it all away when the season ends.

Wood Burning Fireplace Safety Accessories

Equip your fireplace area with a decorative metal or iron fireplace screen, new glass doors, and/or a wire mesh screen for added protection from stray embers or sparks. Do you have a set of fire poker tools nearby, to adjust logs and scoop up ashes? How about a fireproof hearth rug or cover for just outside the fireplace, to catch stray embers or cover burn marks?

Gas Fireplace Safety Tips

Among the top reasons for choosing a gas fireplace is the automated features it offers ― such as remote control, a key-activated gas starter or, depending on the type of gas fireplace you have, no vents or dampers.

If you have a gas fireplace but haven’t used it in a long while, you may want to have it inspected by a professional before you do.

Among the safety tips to follow when you have a gas fireplace in your home:

  • Keep children away from the glass front area, as it can be hot to the touch when in use.
  • Keep the operating manual in an accessible place where family members know where it is.
  • Make sure everyone knows where the gas shutoff valve is located ― and how to shut it off when necessary. Keep the control key in an accessible place. If you have small children, make sure it is away from their grasp.
  • Make sure the barrier screen required with a direct vent model is in good condition.
  • When inspecting your unit, check to ensure it is properly ventilated and there are no leaks, loose fittings, faulty gas igniters, or dirt or dust on gas logs or burners.
  • If inspecting your fireplace is something you would prefer not to do yourself, contact our professional services team for assistance. We’re happy to help.
